Coupon types and restrictions explained

This page explains the coupon types and restrictions you can choose for advocate and friend reward coupons. Use it to pick the right reward before you fill in Advocate reward settings or Friend reward settings.

Coupon types

Coupon type What the customer gets Example with amount 10
Fixed Cart Discount A fixed amount off the whole cart. $10 off the order.
Percentage Discount A percentage off the products in the cart. 10% off the order’s products.
Product Discount A fixed amount off each eligible product in the cart. $10 off every item, unless you set Limit usage to X Items.
Percentage of Friend’s Order Advocate only. A fixed cart coupon worth a percentage of the friend’s order. The friend spends $80, so the advocate gets $8 off.
Free Shipping Don’t use this type. See the next section.

Percentage of Friend’s Order uses the friend’s order total without tax. Shipping is included, unless you turn on Exclude Shipping in the WooCommerce Subscription part of General Settings. The coupon shows as a Fixed cart discount under Marketing → Coupons.

With WooCommerce Subscriptions active you also get Recurring Product Discount, Recurring Product % Discount, Sign Up Fee Discount and Sign Up Fee % Discount. See WooCommerce Subscriptions.

Give free shipping as a reward

The Free Shipping coupon type in version 4.4.12 creates a coupon WooCommerce doesn’t recognize. WooCommerce treats it as a fixed cart discount and doesn’t give free shipping. Set it up like this instead:

  1. In WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping, open your shipping zone and add a Free shipping method.
  2. Set the method’s Free shipping requires to A valid free shipping coupon.
  3. In Advocate Reward or Post-First Purchase Coupon, set Coupon type to Fixed Cart Discount and Coupon Amount to 0.
  4. Click Show advanced options and turn on Free Shipping.
  5. Click Save.

For the friend’s first purchase, create your WooCommerce coupon the same way: a fixed cart discount of 0 with Allow free shipping checked.

Restrictions

Setting What it does
Include Products / Include Categories The coupon only discounts these products. It can’t be used unless one of them is in the cart.
Exclude Products / Exclude Categories These products are never discounted.
Exclude sale items Products on sale aren’t discounted. A fixed cart coupon can’t be used if the cart has sale items.
Individual Use The coupon can’t be combined with other coupons.
Limit usage to X Items For product discounts, how many items get the discount.
Minimum Order The cart subtotal needed to use the coupon.
Coupon Duration Days until the coupon expires. Leave it empty for no expiry.

These work exactly like the WooCommerce coupon fields with the same names. WooCommerce checks them when the customer applies the coupon.

Two different minimums

Setting Where Applies to
Minimum referral order General Settings → Show advanced options The friend’s order. Orders below it don’t earn the advocate a reward.
Minimum Order Advocate Reward or Friend Reward The order where the reward coupon is used.

Minimum referral order is compared with the friend’s order total, including tax and shipping.
